JK 100 Product Review

The JK 100 is the first diagnostic tool to be totally dedicated to Japanese and Korean cars. The system provides real time data including graphing component activation and reading/clearing of fault codes. It also has comprehensive general built in facilities – data recorder, data graphing, oscilloscope, multimeter, and frequency generator. The diagnostic coverage is on a par with those used by the franchised dealers, and the system is supported by a continual development programme that will deliver new vehicle applications as they become available in western Europe. Upgrades will be provided over the internet. It is not just another scanner \ fault code reader – it is a full blown diagnostic tool in it’s own right.
The instrument itself is in a ruggedised case, leads are professional quality, and power supply is from the car’s battery. Application menus are fairly intuitive, just as well since there is no printed manual supplied with the unit. On line help is provided for at the touch of a button if needed. The display is a mono LCD type, with a backlight if required.
The kit as supplied covers :
Toyota/Lexus,Honda, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Mazda, Subaru, Hyundai, Kia, Daewoo, Proton, Perodua, Isuzu, Suzuki & Daihatsu
Models under development, expected imminently:
Owing to the wide range of applications here, we only had a chance to test on a few of these using the scan tool functions on the engine management side - these all worked well, giving full datastream and fault code functions. Our only gripe here was a lack of diagnostic connector location information – no good saving lots of time on diagnostics when it can be used up finding the diagnostic socket location !
Dependant on the application the following applications other than engine management are also available :
ABS
Air Bag
Powertrain
Immobiliser
Autotransmission
The multimeter is full featured covering Volts, Duty cycle, Frequency, and with an optional amp probe amps and battery volts/amps. Max \ Min values are also logged while measuring here.
Sensor simulation functions are catered for – simulating 2 channels for voltage output, and one for frequency output.
A Sensor monitoring menu essentially accesses the oscilloscope function to record different types of sensor signals graphically while allocating the correct scope ranges for the job. Ignition output for both Dis and conventional systems can also be displayed.
The Jewel in the crown for this piece of kit is a 4 channel oscilloscope – although one of the channels is normally used by the ignition circuit, leaving 3 channels remaining. As well as allowing data on different signals to be recorded simultaneously data can also be frozen and previous screens played back to find intermittent faults. Cursors can be used across stored data to pinpoint signal levels at different parts of the stored trace. Scan speeds of 25 Sec in single channel mode, or 0.1Msec in 4 channel mode give adequate resolution for most needs.
The total package is a very attractive proposition for anyone wanting to plug the gap in their far Eastern diagnostic coverage, or as a good diagnostic unit for anyone who concentrates on far Eastern models.
It’s drawbacks are the same as it’s strengths of course – excellent for far East coverage but no European coverage, so extra equipment is needed here. Still, because the JK100 has so many extra features like the 4 channel scope your European diagnostic gear can be rather more basic so saving you money here. You could wait for other manufacturers to wake up and include far Eastern cover of a similar standard, but I fear you will be waiting a long time.
